Richard Heywood M.C – Formby’s Unknown Hero
Alastair Gillies on a fascinating but lesser- known Formby resident from a century ago.
Last year, Alastair wrote a book on the ‘History of Methodism in Formby’. It was while he was researching for the book that he came across the name of Richard Percival Heywood, a Steward at Elbow Methodist Church, for the first time. This led to a fascinating journey of discovery – Richard turned out to have been not only an extremely gifted rugby and cricket player but also an incredibly brave soldier – during World War 1, he was promoted from Private to Major and won the Military Cross. Both amazing achievements.
Yet few people have even heard of him or know anything about him!
So do come along and hear the story of a truly amazing man!
